Kahuzi Biega National Park

It is one of the heavily visited protected areas in Congo and 10% of its landscape is composed of high mountains such as Mountain Kahuzi and Mountain Biega through which the names of these two mountains were combined to name the Park. The Park covers an area of approximately 6000 square kilometers in eastern Congo near the town of Bukavu and near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the border with Rwanda. The park contains a lot of attractive features that its visitors always enjoy though the most tourist attraction in the Park is its diversity in wildlife most especially the eastern lowland gorillas.

Kahuzi Biega National Park is one of the last refugees of the eastern lowland gorillas and tracking them is the major activity in the park. Congo is therefore the most ideal destination for gorilla tours since the trekker will be able to track both the Mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park and then go for lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park unlike in the other gorilla tracking countries where you will only trek either lowland gorillas or mountain gorillas.

After trekking the rare mountain gorillas in Virunga, it is a good decision if you also go for lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega in order to get a great experience in gorilla safaris since you will enjoy numerous behaviors from the types of gorillas. It is always clear that Congo gorilla tours are cheaper than most of the other countries having the same activity (gorilla tracking).

Congo gorilla permit only costs US$ 400 for trekkers to enjoy the amazing behaviors of these great apes. Trekkers will be more amazed when they go for gorilla safaris ahead of the other wildlife safaris because you will realize that there are wildlife species with almost all human behaviors. The gorillas have more than 97% of human DNA and in most cases they behave like real humans. To justify all this you just have to visit Virunga National Park for Mountain gorillas and Kahuzi Biega National Park for the lowland gorillas.

Lowland gorillas are much different from the Mountain gorillas ranging from the size and their daily behaviors and for a complete and memorable gorilla safari you need to experience the two types of gorillas which are all present in Congo. Over 300 lowland gorillas thrive in the eastern parts of Democratic Republic of Congo in its majestic Kahuzi Biega National Park and it will be your dream come true when you visit Congo and both its two gorilla tracking Parks. Gorillas are very shy but social to humans thus trekkers will not get any difficulty to interact with them and are (trekkers) emphasized not to use flashlight cameras while capturing photos because the light might scare them and run away while still viewing them.

Kahuzi-Biega is a UNESCO world heritage site due to its magnificent biodiversity of rain forest habitat and its lowland gorillas. Covering an area of 6000 square kilometers makes it one of the hugest national parks in the country (Congo) and it is nestled in both mountainous and lowland terrains. A small part of the Park is in Mitumba Mountain range of the Albertine rift in the Great Rift-valley and the larger part of it is in the lowland terrain.

The eastern part of the park is the smaller mountainous region measuring 600 square kilometers and the larger part measures 5,400 square kilometers consisting of majorly lowland stretching from Bukavu to Kisangani, drained by the Luka and Lugulu rivers which flow into the Lualaba River. All these makes the Park one of the finest in Africa where one can enjoy the fantasy of Africa.

Besides gorilla safaris, the Park inhabits many other wildlife species visitors will spot during their game viewing such as; chimpanzees, bush buffaloes, aquatic civets, eastern needle-clawed galago, leopards, hylochoerus (giant forest hogs) and bongo, plus many more and numerous bird species. Where to camp in the Park include; Coco lodge, L’Orchids safari club, Hotel Begonias, Lakeside hotel, Exodus hotel, Mount Kahuzi hotel among others.
